Semi-Passive Adaptation of Glazing Visible Transmittance for Optimizing Indoor Daylighting

This research aims to improve indoor daylighting through a design-based approach that adjusts pre-optimized Glazing Visible Transmittance (VT) to yearly daylight variations without real-time automations, addressing the limitations of fixed and smart glazing. Using Ladybug Tools (LBT) within the Grasshopper plugin of Rhinoceros, it evaluates the D_L metric (320 lux ≤ well-lit area (%) ≤ 800 lux) for VT ranges (from 0.90 to 0.20), in a north-facing, side-lit office of Sydney, Australia.

Results reveal that while fixed yearly VT in 0.70 range increases D_L metric up to 7%, the proposed passive adaptation VT approach further enhances D_L metric to 21%, compared to the base case with a VT 0.90.
