Towards a digital shadow: Methodology development for continuous commissioning of domestic hot water systems

In this paper, we focus on the development of a digital shadow of a domestic hot water (DHW) storage tank with internal heating coil. The aim is to establish data-driven methods that, with minimal data input and effort, show ways to reduce return temperatures, in this paper particularly by adjusting PI controller settings or improving tank stratification.

For now, simulation results show only minor potential reductions in the return temperature (<1°C) which might be improved by further model accuracy. This paper is intended to show the current state of development and seeks to further verify its practical feasibility.
