Professor Pieter de Wilde

LTH Faculty of Engineering

Presenter bio

Pieter de Wilde is a full professor at LTH in Sweden, and visiting professor at Strathclyde in Scotland. He is well-known in IBPSA, having won the IBPSA Young Contributor Award in 2003, having held various roles in IBPSA-England between 2006 and 2022, and through various activities on the Board of IBPSA since 2014.

Pieter’s main research emphasis is on thermal building performance simulation, and its use in the building services and engineering community. He also has an interest in building performance monitoring in their actual day-to-day context which enables critical reflection on the validity of computational results, and their meaning in building operation and facility management practice.

He has authored over 290 publications on various topics related to building performance, including the seminal academic book Building Performance Analysis which was published in 2018 and which is the third book to be endorsed by IBPSA. He is a member of the Editorial Board of IBPSA’s Journal of Building Performance Simulation. Outside IBPSA Pieter is Associate Editor of Advanced Engineering Informatics, and serves on the Editorial Board of Applied Energy, Energy and Buildings, and Building Simulation Journal.

At Building Simulation 2025, Pieter will talk about AI in building performance simulation, and how it may change our field. His talk will explore various emerging technologies, including machine learning, large language models and digital twins, how these interact with each other, and what this means for building simulation and the wider building engineering field going forward.
